What is sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition in which your sciatic nerve gets irritated, causing mild, moderate, or intense pain. Your sciatic nerve runs from your lower back through your butt, hips, thighs, and down each leg. Sciatica often affects just one side of your body. Treatment relieves the symptoms.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

If you have sciatica you could experience the following symptoms:

  • Radiating pain down one leg
  • Discomfort near your sciatic nerve pathway
  • Mild aching pain
  • Sharp, severe pain
  • Burning pain
  • An electric shock or jolting sensation
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Muscle weakness
  • Pain on one side of your body

Sciatica can occur when your sciatic nerve is pinched by a herniated spinal disc, bone spur, a tumor, or something else. Risk factors for developing sciatica include obesity, older age, prolonged sitting, diabetes, and carrying heavy loads.

How is sciatica diagnosed?

To diagnose sciatica, your Fountain Valley Physical Medicine specialist discusses your medical history and asks about your symptoms. They complete a physical exam and can use blood tests, as well as X-rays, MRIs, or other imaging procedures to diagnose your condition and develop a personalized treatment plan.

What is the treatment for sciatica?

Your sciatica treatment will consist of one or more of the following solutions:

Chiropractic adjustments

Adjusting your spine with a series of manipulation techniques helps realign your spine and ease sciatic nerve pressure.

Disc decompression traction

During disc decompression traction, your provider gently stretches and manipulates areas of your spine to alter its position and take the pressure off the spinal discs and nerves.

Massage therapy

Massage therapy is a holistic way to manipulate soft tissues that are tight, tense, or that place pressure on the sciatic nerve. Your provider applies manual pressure to the affected, painful areas to provide relief.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy stretches and strengthens painful tissues to ease discomfort naturally and prevent further injuries.

Regenerative Therapy

Your Fountain Valley Physical Medicine specialist offers regenerative therapy to ease inflammation, regenerate new cells and tissues, optimize healing, and reduce pain.

Muscle stimulation

Muscle stimulation uses radio pulse and rapid pulse waves to reduce the pain signals sent to your brain. This provides immediate sciatica relief.

K-laser treatments

Laser treatments use light energy to stimulate your body’s natural healing ability and relieve chronic pain without surgery or downtime.

Pain creams

Applying compound cream to painful areas near your lower back, hips, and thighs can reduce sciatica discomfort and restore your quality of life.
