Research has proven that the spinal discs are a primary site of back and leg pain, as well as neck and arm pain. The spinal discs are the soft tissue that is located between each bony segment of your spine. The disc is damaged by trauma or prolonged and/or repetitive “compression and flexion”. The disc is a vascular (it has no direct blood supply after the age of 25). It gets its nutrients in and waste products out by diffusion (like a sponge). The more damaged the disc, the less normal diffusion of nutrients occurs, and the disc begins to dry-up or dehydrate. In this dehydrated condition it is easy for the disc to bulge and put pressure on sensitive spinal nerve roots causing radiating arm or leg pain.

Disc Decompression Traction Therapy intermittently stretches the spine in a safe, controlled and very specific way to open the disc spaces. This decreases the pressure on the discs and allows an increase of blood flow into the discs to help them heal. Research indicates that in many cases, disc bulges may be sucked or drawn-in by Disc Decompression Traction this removes the abnormal pressure on the pinched nerves, thereby relieving annoying arm or leg pain.

Since traction works with the body’s natural healing processes it does take time to gain full relief. Twelve sessions is the usual minimum number for disc injuries, especially with leg or arm pain radiation. Once your condition has reached maximum recovery, a maintenance program of monthly Disc Decompression Traction Therapy may be recommended.

Spinal Decompression Traction is a safe and comfortable treatment for most individuals. It rarely causes pain or worsens symptoms as long as it is not used in patients with acute severe pain of less than one week, especially if it’s difficult for the person to move or bend. Laser Therapy or Electrical Stimulation is better during the initial acute stage, to decrease the severe inflammation.
